The Punalu'u Black Sand Beach where sea turtles nest is 10 minutes away. In PahalaPahala itself is a small town, with some convenience stores and a public library. You'll find a Tex Drive In here to fill all your Hawaiian fast food needs. In addition, the Wood Valley Temple, visited by the Dalai Lama, is right down the road, through a grove of macadamia nut trees. Pahala was once an active sugar plantation town that employed many of the locals. Since the plantation closed, many now commute to other parts of the island for employment while others have ventured into private businesses, like growing coffee for exporting to the mainland. That peaceful land, that beautiful land, that far-off home of solitude and soft idleness, and repose, and reams, where life is one long slumberous Sabbath, the climate one long summer day, and the good that die experience no change, for they but fall asleep in one heaven and wake up in another.
